The LTACH provides the same level of in-depth care as a traditional hospital but for an extended recovery period, while the ARU is designed for patients recovering from acute injuries, impairments, or illnesses. The facility partners with physicians and offers 24-hour clinical care seven days a week. Nursing roles involve comprehensive care delivery through the nursing process of Assessment, Planning, Intervention, and Evaluation, with an emphasis on developing coordinated nursing care plans alongside patients, families, and interdisciplinary staff. Nurses are expected to maintain ongoing communication regarding changes in patients' clinical conditions with physicians, nursing supervisors/managers, and co-workers, and to participate actively in the discharge planning process. The setting offers nurses the opportunity to work with complex, extended-recovery patients in a structured, collaborative specialty care environment.
